If you love the outdoors and all it has to offer, then Damascus, Virginia is the place for you! Known as the gateway to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, the town where the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail cross, and the Friendliest Town on the Appalachian Trail. No matter what you like doing, you can find it in Damascus!
Damascus was featured in Wanderlust Magazine's October 2015 issue as a must stop on the Appalachian Trail, which is one of the world's most famous foothpaths spanning 2200 miles from Maine to Georgia. The Virginia Creeper Trail also traverses Damascus and is a multi-use trail that is open to walkers, joggers, horses, and biking. There are many rental and shuttle services available in Damascus for bikers, as well.
If you love to hunt and fish, there is plenty of animal life available in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, including designated wilderness. Bows, rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders are all permitted during their appropriate seasons for whitetails, turkeys, grouse, squirrels and several other species are abundant. Crossbows are not allowed and hunters must have appropriate state and local hunting licences and stamps as well as a National Forest stamp and must wear Blaze Orange, as dictated by Virginia law. For fishermen, Whitetop Laurel Creek is one of the state's largest and most beautiful wild trout streams with approximately seven miles stocked trout waters on both public and private lands.
